Can Charles Schwab's Success Really Rest So Completely on
Financial Services Marketing (08/00) Vol. 2, No. 5 p.14; Reinbach, Andrew
According to the book "Clicks and Mortar: Passion
Driven Growth in an Internet Driven World" by Charles Schwab
co-CEO David S. Pottruck and senior vice president Terry Pearce,
Charles Schwab's rise to the top among financial services
companies is mainly due to the company's exceptional corporate
culture. First, Schwab is built around a chairman who is totally
committed to helping others reach their financial goals. Next,
the book claims, a core group of executives feels the same way as
the chairman, and they help to implement the culture throughout
the company. To ensure that values do not get lost as they are
transmitted down the line, Schwab has hired a person whose job it
is to edit executive memos, weeding out errant phrases that might
deviate from the company line. Finally, the book claims that
Schwab makes sure all of its employees accept this basic culture
and these values.
