Bear Stearns Deal Talk Focuses on Big Banks
American Banker (08/09/00) Vol. 190, No. 2 p.20; Rieker, Matthias
While experts speculating on which bank has approached
Bear Stearns with an acquisition proposal do not agree--some
think Chase is probably the unnamed bank, while others think it
might be UBS or Deutsche Bank--most feel it likely that the buyer
would be a large commercial bank. Michael Schroder of Schroder &
Co. does not anticipate that there will be an acquisition of Bear
Stearns soon, but he said Bear's investment-products business and
its operations in clearing and mortgage would be appealing to
Chase.
